1. All 4:3 HDTV sets will display HDTV programs in the letterbox format (black bars above and below the picture) because of the shape of the display screen.
2. Turn on the 4:3 OVERRIDE feature in the User Settings menu. This will allow most standard screen TVs to display a full screen picture when the set-top box is tuned to a 4:3 program. To do this, turn off the DVR and then press the "Menu" button on the DVR. Choose "4:3 Override" and use the right arrow to enable this selection.
3. Set the TV TYPE to 4:3 Pan-Scan. This will allow the set-top box to remove the black bars above and below the picture when possible. Turn off the DVR and then press the "Menu" button on the DVR. "TV Type" is the first choice in the menu. Use the left and right arrows on your set-top box remote to change the selection to 4:3 Pan Scan.
4. Some standard definition programs are broadcast in the letterbox format with black bars above and below the picture. Some wide screen TVs offer a zoom feature that may be able to remove the black bars (consult the TV manual for information on zooming 4:3 video).
