Gemstar-TV GUIDE and Insight Communications Sign IPG, Channel Distribution and Licensing Agreement
Los Angeles, CA and New York, NY – October 22, 2003 –
Gemstar-TV Guide International, Inc. (NASDAQ: GMST) and Insight Communications (NASDAQ:ICCI) today announced a distribution and licensing agreement under which Insight will deploy TV Guide Interactive, the industry-leading interactive program guide (IPG). Under the agreement, Gemstar-TV Guide will provide Insight's cable systems with the most advanced version of its IPG, supporting Insight's interactive digital services platform, including its video-on-demand (VOD) service, high definition (HD) programming, and digital video recorder (DVR) functionality. Insight expects to begin deploying TV Guide Interactive to its DVR-enabled customers in time for the upcoming holiday retail season.
Concurrently, Gemstar-TV Guide and Insight agreed to extend existing commitments by Insight Communications to distribute the TV Guide Channel, which is currently carried on the majority of Insight systems. Additionally, TV Guide has agreed to provide Insight's VOD-enabled customers with TV Guide On Demand, an on-demand enhancement to the TV Guide Channel that provides viewers with a rich array of program information, previews, reviews and recommendations. Utilizing TV Guide's vast library of programming, TV Guide On Demand leverages the exclusive behind-the-scenes access and distinctive point of view that have made TV Guide television's most trusted brand for more than 50 years.
"This agreement with Insight is an important bellwether for us, demonstrating the extraordinary progress we've made in improving the quality of our products and in providing flexibility in the deal terms we offer to our cable partners," stated Ian Aaron, president, TV Guide Television Group. "Insight has long been recognized as one of the most progressive MSO's in the industry, having launched VOD, local interactive content and telephony early in the game. We are pleased that they have chosen TV Guide Interactive as an important tool for their future growth and innovation."
"This partnership represents the continued emphasis Insight places on enhancing our interactive digital platform to provide the best possible value to our customers," said Michael S. Willner, Insight's President and CEO. "The addition of TV Guide Interactive's advanced functionality, particularly in utilizing on-demand content, is absolutely the right fit as we continue to pioneer the digital customer experience."
As part of the agreement, Gemstar-TV Guide will acquire a non-exclusive license for the IPG technology of SourceSuite, LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Insight Communications. In addition, Insight will have the option of integrating its interactive LocalSource information and entertainment service into TV Guide Interactive, enabling its customers to access localized news, weather and other personalized information as part of their TV Guide Interactive experience. Insight will also have access to TV Guide's listings data for use across its digital customer base. Insight's deployment of the TV Guide Interactive IPG under the agreement announced today is subject to the availability of certain enhanced set-top boxes and completion of software integration.
